7th Elim – White Mt

The Eagles of the School of Elim, greeted us with a big hand at our today's presentation
and they even sang in tune the refrain of my song about the Yukon and Bering Quest. We left at noon towards Golovin and White Mountain. The first 10 miles on the sea ice and under the coast were real spectacular. At a coastal shelter cabin we started climbing the Walla Walla hill for more that 13 miles of constant climb until 2000 feet of elevation !! The snow was very soft and we had to work VERY HARD our way up, kicking and running continuously until the top which is called " Little Mc Kinley " for its high difference in elevation.
The view of the Golovin Bay from up there is really incredible. A long side hill descent brought us again on sea level at another shelter cabin. From there in a quick while we arrived fast in Golovin, a small village rooted on a windy cape where in 1925, at the Dexter's RoadHouse, LEONARD SEPPALA and his team led by TOGO and SCOTTY passed the serum, after a long 90 mile run from Shaktoolik, to the fresh team of 7 malemutes of Charlie Olson, towards Bluff ( a ghost abandoned town on the coast not reachable today. The lead dog of that team was JACK.

We couldn't run on the whole bay as usual because there was open water in many spots, so after an endless series of little hills with very soft and slow snow, we arrived in White Mountain, at the local Elementary School, around 6 pm after 6 hours of travel. Tomorrow morning we'll start at 7 am in the dark because Nome is 77 miles away from here. I CAN'T WAIT TO ARRIVE !!!
